Megamalai, as poetic as the name is, so too does the location. Even this location is called Highway. When you have experienced the place’s aura, you ride along with you for a long time. The untouched evergreen forest around Megamalai makes it so seductive and unpolluted in amazing way. Many people call it ‘the secret paradise,’ and it is not an exaggeration either.
The winding dam nestling runs around the Briar Tea bungalow is a fascination to see all the along while moving around the place. Unlike Valparai which is entirely covered by the bed of green tea plantation, Megamalai is much more of natural shades of many colors and uneven bushes and patches of evergreen forest, plantation and water stream which greets the eye anywhere we go around The Meghamalai mountain range can be approached in two ways, one from Theni via Chinnamanur and the other from Andipatti via Kandamanayakkanur. Both Theni and Andipatti can be easily accessed by road from Madurai and Dindigul. Theni, which is 76 km from Madurai. Only forest lodges and panchayath rest houses are available at the hilltop. Prior reservation and permission is an absolute must. If looking for a night stay here, one can make a room reservation from the forest check-post located 3 km from Chinnamannur on way to Meghamalai.
One must reach the check-post at least before 5 PM if seeking a night’s stay in Meghamalai. Day-trippers may stay in a number of moderately priced hotels in Theni, Chinnamanur, and Andipatti.Once you enter the road where the bungalows are situated you will want to stay in the Cloud Mountain Bungalow. It is perfectly placed right inside so cozy surrounded by all stupendous views available. Step out of the bungalow to see the water stream flowing right in front of the bungalow, whereas the other side gives a tremendous view of the tea estate and massive mountains encircling you. It’s a perfect colonial home, still holding its heritage intact.
A goodly living room, three capacious bedrooms, a small library, and an awe-inspiring sit-out gives a feeling of opulence. We have a functional fireplace, not as an architectural design but a requirement in winter. Stepping out is more than enough to feel cherished and content of the trip.
